I am teaching isiXhosa to students in other Faculties and it is a prerequisite and thus compulsory. The challenge is that they often lose interest in the class and I am now trying to explore technological platforms such as YouCam 7 and Poll Everywhere to keep them engaged in class. The effectiveness of these platforms is short-lived. I need advise on other innovative ways of teaching non-speakers of the language can you recommend as well as assessment criteria to use.
When I tutorr italian or french I use the immersion method with conversation, depending on the level. i try to use topics of interest to the students in the target language. Also games and interactive exercises make learning a new language more intersting and fun

Thank you so much Simon A Jack for sharing the, i have no doybt that it will assist me a lot. I have tried platforms such as YouCam7 and recently Poll Everywhere, but still very few participate or rather remain motivated.
However, the challenge is developing online exercises where they will get feedback as soon as they complete the exercise, and also keeping track of who's completed the exercises.
