I am quite sure that the traffic and pedestrians travel patterns are future avenues of the research based on the big data, gathered in the automated (digital) observation; Related directly to your question is Sustainability in Cities (Green Cities) and providing thermal comfort for plants, people and protect them from the immissions - maybe covered streets? maybe multiple level streets (like greenhouses) with parks...
Something we had been looking at is the cost-benefit analysis of green roofs and facades, considering their effect both indoor and outdoor urban environments. There are many side effects that need to be considered, like water retention and bio-diversity on these areas. All this needs to combined with energy simulations and on-site measurements
