Does anyone have an article on the impact of the environment on port construction materials? I am trying to find out what limits there are in terms of what materials to use in a port project depending on the influence the environment has on their durability. Relevant information will be highly appreciated.
Do you want to know what is the environmental impact of the construction of a port (harbour) or the embodied energy of the materials used for its construction.
The first aspect is clearly related mainly with the design of the project and a less by the type of material.
The second point can be quite different if you use natural conventional materials in the concrete to build your harbour or if you drag materials from the see. In the second case, there are important durability issues related with chloride content.
To summarize:
For the design, you have all biodiversity loss related withe the construction of the harbour. Concerning materials and more specifically concrete, you have durability issues related with Chloride content depending on the mix design of your concrete.

1) corrosion,
A) A given harbor may be subject to corrosion from fresh water issues as well as salt water issues. both chemical and biological factors may apply.
2) erosion,
3) tidal effects,
4) wave impact,
5) storm surge resistance,

First, there is this book: Gjørv, OE (1968): Durability of reinforced concrete wharves in Norwegian harbours. The Norwegian committee on concrete in seawater. Ingeniørforlaget A/S, Oslo/NO: pp 208. Even if a bit oldish, its basic principles still apply.
Furthermore, why not get in touch with the people at TU Delft Civil Engineering & Geosciences, which also comprises 'design of marine structures' and is closely related to the Stevin Laboratory. Whom you may want to talk to will depend whether you want to focus on chemical, mechanical, or other aspects of durability.

Concrete service in tidal zone, splash zone and atmoshpere zone(nearby the sea) should be attentaion especially. May be the FRP reinforced concrete is another choice for unloading structure
