As quantum technologies advance, there is a growing emphasis on integrating sustainability and ensuring equitable access. Research is increasingly exploring how quantum innovations can be developed responsibly, minimizing environmental impact and promoting inclusivity. This includes developing energy-efficient quantum systems, establishing ethical frameworks, and ensuring that the benefits of quantum technologies are accessible to diverse populations.
One prominent and upcoming area of quantum technology that focuses on sustainability is research into the mechanism of carbon capture. Currently, simulating efficient carbon capture remains classically intractable, however quantum computers show promise. In doing this, we can generate new materials and systems that work to bind carbon dioxide effectively and clean the atmosphere.
As this research is carried out, there seems to generally be an emphasis on ensuring R&D costs are minimised. As such, quantum algorithms should be optimised to have minimal depth and corresponding computational cost. The technology could change the world and should be strategically developed in places where the effects of climate change are most severe.
