There are many activities that are presented to students as "games" and others that are not considered as such activities.
Depending on how you view a game may be a form of play. And according to Brown & Vaughan (2009) play has the following conditions:
Apparently purposeless (done for its own sake)
Voluntary
Inherent attraction
Freedom from time
Diminished consciousness of self
Improvisational potential
Continuation desire.
A game would have the above conditions but would be more rule based over the improv design.
