There are several guidelines or advice available for doing a successful PhD. However, there seem to be limited guidelines or advice for a successful postdoctoral research fellowship – what could be the reason for this? It’s hard even to find information on simple questions like ‘How long should the postdoc be?’ ‘What is a successful post-doc? Any ideas would be welcome. Thank you.
Since PDF is not an academic degree, there is no mandatory guidelines for PDF. However, Indian Institute of Technologies in INDIA have framed guidelines which can be found in the institute websites. The guidelines may vary from one IIT to another IIT.
Since PDF is a temporary research position, a PDF would be always searching for a job. Once a suitable job is found, a PDF may quit instantly.
One can do PDF as long as the passion to do independent research is present or until a good position is found. Nevertheless, age restrictions apply in some countries and institutes. Prof. H.M Duong of NUS did 4 PDFs over a span of 7 years.
A successful PDF should have stayed (avoiding the temptation to take up a position immediately during the first year without concentrating on the project) at least for a certain period of time in an institute for a considerable time frame of the project and published a minimum of two publications in SCI journals. If a PDF did not make any research outputs, it can be considered that he went as a mere tourist to visit a particular country or just to attach a name tag of the institute in the CV.
Post doc should allow the individual opportunity / chance. to shine in a research project.
Doctoral degree is the highest (formal) academic degree. As a result, there are guidelines up to the PhD level. Beyond PhD level (or at a postdoc level), research, teaching and supervision are the next duties of someone with a PhD degree. The person would have learnt or be having full grasp of research methodology (to initiate research), gained/learnt supervision skills from his advisors, and be able to convey information to audience through numerous presentations during his/her PhD programme. Thus, I view a postdoc programme as a period to put into practice knowledge gained overtime in terms of research, teaching, supervision and (a bit of) administration.
A postdoctoral Researcher is an individual who is professionally conducting research after the completion of Doctoral Studies. The critical objective of a postdoctoral research is to conduct further research, drill, or coaching in direction to devour improved competence to pursue a profession in academic world, research, or any further arenas.
