1. Difficulty in accessing publications during the literature review stage. Because of this, sometimes researchers who work in an institutional setting still have to purchase articles with their own money.
2. Difficulty in sourcing funding, especially at the national level.
3. I can also cite lack of genuine interest in doing quality research. From my experience, I can safely say that if research was not somewhat compulsory, many academics here would not do it. This condition does not create an environment that is naturally conducive for research.
4.Tendency of advanced countries, top journals, and reviewers to look down on research from Africa, especially those conducted by African-based academics.
I think lack of funding, scarcity of mentors, lack of writing skills, lack of motivation and low demand for research by policy makers are the main challenges of conducting research in Africa.
The three main challenges identified as limiting the contributions of African scholars to the informatics literature are lack of appropriate skills, inadequate data collection sources, and unaffordable analytical tools.
An anthropologist coming to Africa must be concerned about the absorbing character of the people. The scientist could lose his/her vantage point (abstraction).

Access to the latest scientific literature is one of the major impediment to conducting research in Africa. It is for this reason the research4life (research4life.org) program was developed which provides access to scientific literature for researchers in LDC countries.
Corruption that deprives people of the basic needs is the only hitch to research in Africa! People engage in survival activities than focusing on research and innovation!
Some of the key barriers to research in Africa are; Lack of funding; inadequate materials and equipment for the conduct of research (especially with respect to biomedical research); and lack of mentorship and orientation on the ethics of research
Africa Researchers are experiencing several challenges in performing developmental research. I think the following factors are responsible for the failure to conduct research in Africa; (1) Inadequate Research grants, specifically targeting the area of Science and Technology would be beneficial for sustainable development. (2) Lack of motivation for research, and frequent training opportunities and (3) Inadequate budgetary allocations for Institution Based Research (IBR).
In addition to the lack of well-equiped labs and other facilities, most of the African Researchers do not really trust to their potential to change the world through research work. Therefore, most of the investigations are basic researches.
Poor infrastructure and lack of focus. In some countries the best brains are not recruited, political connections and where you come from dictate ones employability
Well, some colleagues mentioned lack of funding as one of the major challenges of research in Africa. In my opinion, there is a reasonable funding for research from both local and international sponsors in many African countries, e.g in Nigeria, TETFUND is pumping monies (average of USD 12O,000 per research group). Similar situations happen in other countries like South Africa, etc. The young talented African researchers should be motivated to think and design a good proposal to win Grants (both local and International) so that they can compete with their counterpart in other part of the World
