I am not aware of such studies in the context of developing countries. However, in developed countries patients/friends and relatives can use legal system if they have sufficient evidence to support their case of malpractice. Since, most of the developing countries do not have such a system, vandalism is inevitable because in general people don't have a venue to ask for justice in terms of perceived or real case of malpractice. Hence, Nepal needs to prescribe a policy to protect both provider and the patients.

Thank you Prof. Subedi for your note. Is there any possibility to get small funding to accomplish this task? I have been thinking to follow the specific cases in details. e.g. Case review from the news papers/social media, selection of some hospitals in Kathmandu and outside Kathmandu, engaged with the cases and interview various levels of stakeholders -patients and care takers, trade unions, doctors, nurses, hospital authority, security persons, and explore  dispute management and agreement.  I am sure there will be multiple versions and views.Based on the findings, we can prescribe a policy to protect both service providers and the patients. At this phase I want to collect empirical evidence.

Well not in Nepal but over here in Pakistan, hospital vandalism are common features and usually highlighted in social media as part of accountability of the rulers. Perhaps, there is no organized research study done as far as I know!.. however I can site some reasons/determinants of this type of vandalism:

1. Overcrowded tertiary care hospitals with low resources, but mainly due to lack of effective referral system.

2. Non-availability of relevant staff at times of emergency and 

3. lack of adequate counselling services; especially when emotions of relatives are high alonwith high expectations.  Perhaps one can add lack of patience and forbearance of the society at large also.

It is true that when access, quality of care, cost etc are questionable or inadequate vandalism or riots are inevitable. Then the question is why the same pattern persists in those institution who explicitly caters only to the upper middle and upper class clientele? I personally think it is due to lack of malpractice policy and laws.

Permit me two comments:

first, it's not accurate to call it hospital vandalism. the hospital is not the target, nor is it limited to hospitals. It is directed at doctors and nurses. I.e., people not equipment. Call it "thrashing of doctors"

Next, improving the malpractice laws would be nice, but not effective. My view is the resort to violence is prompted by cultural factors that go considerably deeper than that.

Third, I have extensive contacts among the doctors and nurses of Nepal to work on this issue, and the FaceBook page for my project  has 7,445 "likes." there is ample empirical data out there, including my own commentary on what it takes to overcome this problem; but if you wish to find people to share info, my advice is to start a FaceBook page and set up a network. I'd be happy to help you set one up and to publicize it.

along these lines, I have published on my blog a list of steps to take to mitigate the problem.

finally, I expect to return to Nepal this summer. I have no funding of any kind to share with you. But I'd be happy to discuss this with you when I am there.
