You can check out the Global Historical Climatology Network (GHCN) from NOAA/NCDC. If you look at the World Meteorological Organization's (WMO) world weather records, you will be redirected to NOAA/National Climatic Data Centre (NCDC) where all data is stored. Both links are attached.

Thank you for the info. But, I am looking for a grid data base. The one (NOAA) you suggested is station-based and also not very up-to-date. I need a free grid-based database covering a vast area with a good temporal coverage.

There are many meteorological fields for entire globe and for long periods of time provided. Different formats of data files are supported.

If you have some deep interest to existing model data with entire globe coverage, I can make a remark about possibility to use free GRIB files from different models which contain gridded fields for different model runs: diagnostic data and forecast data.

For example, FNMOC (Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center) grants free access to such data (these data are kept for all periods of the models used in operation). The link to folder with different model data is attached below. But you should have some software for reading data from GRIB files.

Model NAVGEM can be considered (the link is provided). It has a horizontal resolution of 0,5 deg. Four model runs are available on a daily basis. NAVGEM is an operational model of FNMOC used since 2013 to present time.

Model GFS can be considered (the link is provided). It has a horizontal resolution of 1 deg. Two model runs are available on a daily basis.

Model NOGAPS can be considered (the link is provided). It was used during 2004-2013 (this model is not running now). Four model runs are available on a daily basis.

Depending on the problem at hand, I would try to get datasets from different institutes (NASA, NCAR/NCEP, ERA, ...), extract the fields you require, and try to do comparisons over stations of the retrieved fields with actual observations (if available). Specially for the "daily data" you originally talked about, there might be some noticeable differences between datasets from different institutions, for example in terms of minimum vs maximum daily temperature, or timing of precipitation events within the day. 

There are also a number of papers comparing various (re-)analyses, with relevant information on possible reasons for differences, often linked to the different physical parametrisation schemes present in the forecast model used to provide the background fields when doing the assimilation of the various observations.

Hello Behnam,

all depends on density and accuracy of data You need. You can take METAR reports and they are available almost every hour. You have to make a script to get this data from the Internet, decode them and make i.e. objectiv analysis to get a grided data. It is a lot of work, but when that works at least, you have an excellent data set with actual weather every hour.

Have you ever considered the meteorological data and the Copernicus environmental data from ECMWF, Reading UK? They might be worth a look as they come as GRIB or Netcdf data, and might be free or low cost.

In practice most of the farmers I know use sources like local radio, the Met office or the BBC, ABC etc. They are often just looking for a guide and not very detailed forecasts as they feel they can usualy tell from looking outside what the future holds. I agree with the other comments on ECMWF, NOAA, gribs, etc but they are often a bit too complicated to use.
