Can anyone tell me or share any papers that would explain what's the benefit (or maybe a disadvantage) of a metagenic life cycle in jellyfish cultivation?
Metagenic life cycles, which include a benthic polyp stage, can boost jellyfish mass occurrences via asexual recruitment of pelagic medusae. https://besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1365-2656.13147
I don't know that it has been published, but in the public aquarium industry we find the major benefit of the polyp stage to be hardiness in most species. Most species of polyps need less feeding than medusae, can be kept in glass bowls or dishes instead of expensive kreisels, and when you think they've died you find they only encysted and have re-emerged unharmed and ready to reproduce. There is a book by Chad Widmer, "How to Keep Jellyfish in Aquariums" that is the most recommended guide for jellyfish aquarists in our industry.
