Under today's current context of accountability, teachers and administrators feel immense pressure to focus on academic instruction and "teaching to the test". However, research suggests the importance of using a whole child approach for culturally and linguistically diverse students.
In effect, if the aim is to close achievement gaps, social and cultural factors simply cannot be ignored. What can teachers do within their current contexts to transform their schools to better serve the needs of these students? What should teacher education programs do to prepare teachers to play an advocacy role?
