I am working on RGP contact lenses and silicon hydrogel contact lenses, Both materials are extremely hydrophobic. I would like to reduce the hydrophobicity (contact angle 90 to 20-30). I am interested in creating permanent bonding of hydrophilic groups such as OH on the surface.
Any relevant research or expert opinion will be appreciated.

First of all you need to know the composition of material you are working with, So based on this you can propose chemical modification both the surface of material or for the bulking. If you are developing the material you could modify the lateral groups as you proposed for example by introduction of hydrophilic groups or even co-polymerize the polymeric chains with a more hydrophilic monomer. Your question is too much generic, than is difficult to provide a answer which could fit better your case.
