At least since the 1980s, most Latin American countries have followed -sometimes only in part and for some time- some kind of politics of decentralization and/or regionalization, imposed or inspired by international agencies. What are the most important theories on territorial organization of nation-states related to this phenomenon? Who did study this? Do you have concrete experiences with processes of decentralization?
It strikes me that the literature on the politics of decentralization reform in Latin America might be relevant to you. In my view, some of the best work in this area include the following three books:

Falleti, T. G. (2010). Decentralization and subnational politics in Latin America. Cambridge University Press.
Angell, A., Lowden, P., & Thorp, R. (2001). Decentralizing development: The political economy of institutional change in Colombia and Chile. OUP Catalogue.

Personally, I study the local politics of decentralized governance of natural resources (for example how local politicians respond to their new rights and responsibilities that come with the decentralization reforms).
