Ricebean is underutilized yet potential crop. The crops of legume family are generally uniform, but ricebean shows variation in seeds and plant growth habits. What are your thoughts about it.
The rice bean (Vigna umbellata) is a legume that's different from other crops in a few ways:
1. Rice bean seeds are well-balanced source of beneficial constituents such as protein, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and anti-oxidants for health benefits and combating malnourishment in human.
2. Rice beans are rich in protein (18–26% DM) and starch (52–57% DM), and contain limited amounts of fiber and fat
3. Rice beans can grow in warm climates, high temperatures, and humidity, and can thrive in annual rainfall of 700–1730 mm and temperatures of 18–30°C. They can also grow at altitudes of up to 2000 m and in a wide range of soils, including fertile loams and moderately fertile red soils
4. Vigna umbellata or rice bean is an underutilized legume having potential to compete with other available legumes owing to its nutritional attributes.
5. Ricebean is a promising multipurpose crop with a good potential to be used as food, fodder, green manure and cover crop, the dried seeds are usually eaten boiled or as pulses. Young immature pods are used as vegetables.
