Your question seems to be very broad and you may need to narrow it down in order to conduct the research. As a food for thought I am sharing few research ideas below:
1) Social media friendships vs. normal Friendships. It is said a person is known by the company he keeps. Does social media friends put a positive (negative) impact on students urge to learn and perform in academics / studies.
2) Now a days, it is observed that universities and students have made a page on social media (e.g Facebook) where they share updates. These updates may be department specific, course specific, university specific etc...) . One may investigate the effectiveness of such initiatives.
3) As a student of Virtual university, you may initiate (if it does not exists) a page for current students of VU students of the same course. The page may aim to help other class fellows in the problems and share notes and learning. You may adopt an experimentation technique and learn the effectiveness of this page among students.
These were just quick thoughts that came to my mind. You are welcome to ask questions if you require further guidance in the matter.
