Do you mean ways to convert numbers into binary code?
If you do, you could convert your number to a long int (since every number, even decimal ones, has a long int representation), and then convert it to binary.
There are lot of specific function to do that. It deppends on the programming language you're using.

We can use 8 bits to represent the values of X in the following way:
-5.0 is represented by the binary coding '00000000' (decimalValue = 0)
+5.0 is represented by the binary coding '11111111' (decimalValue = 2 ^ 8 - 1)
In general, X = decimalValue / (5.0 - -5.0)
