They are totally different in terms of architecture,
5G will not be a cellular network any more, it is about connecting the entire society in one network. This will include integrating Cellular, Intelligent Transportation Systems, Internet of Things, WLAN, and low-power wireless technologies ( for Medical Applications and so on) in one network.
Dense deployment is needed with 1000x of traffic as well as intensive interworking between different technology. It might require defining new protocols as well.
Regarding the enabling technologies, Massive MIMO, mmWave are one of them.
I suggest you to look at the new waveforms in this paper "Waveform contenders for 5G - OFDM vs. FBMC vs. UFMC" . The author suggest that FBMC is better suited than OFDM in theory however, practical considerations pinpoint many issues of FBMC. UFMC is promising which is collecting the advantages FBMC while avoiding its drawbacks.
Pilot contamination is the issue related to sharing of pilots between small cells in multiuser systems with large MIMOS used. Sharing pilots will results in interference causing less reliable channel estimation (assuming no coordination between the neighboring cells exists so as to share the pilots say at different times thereby avoiding pilots contamination). Yes, of course. Pilots are and can be any of the OFDM carriers but they are used for CSI (channel state information). There are number of pilots in each resource block in OFDM. You need to review OFDM resources block structure - in any book on OFDM- which include data carriers and pilot carriers. There also dc carrier (reference carrier on which no data is sent) and some left as guard bands. Thanks. @AlDmour.
