What exactly are border nodes in a social network? Any specific definition. Can somebody help me in understanding role of border nodes in information diffusion across communities in a social network?
in case you refer with "boarder nodes" to actors that are less densly knit into groups (e.g. cliques) while connecting such otherwise unconnected groups (I would call these nodes "brokers"), have a look at my paper on "Measuring the social capital of brokerage roles" (Connections, 2004, Vol.26, 1). I also wrote a paper with Wolfgang Sodeur on "The flow of information in evolving social groups" (in: "Why context matters", Springer, 2008).
Other recommended readings: Ronald Burt "Brokerage and Closure" (2005, Oxford University Press); Gould and Fernandez "Structures of Mediation: a formal approach to brokerage" (Sociological Methodology, 1989); Robert K. Merton on Locals and Cosmopolitans in "Social Theory and Social Structure" (Free Press, 1968).
In social networks, border nodes are those on the periphery of communities (or the network). They have an important role in spreading information among communities as they (communities) are connected through these nodes. They are usually used to take control of information propagation whether the objective is to keep or to inhibit the diffusion. I propose to see works of Pr. Dirk Brockmann on diffusion, for example, " The Hidden Geometry of Complex, Network-Driven Contagion Phenomena" and many others, you can get a good idea on diffusion in complex networks in general.
