My research team and I are designing and piloting several smart communities. As a personal project I want to write a series of peer reviewed articles focused on integrating our applied research with theoretical studies hence I am seeking to expand our research themes. The obvious research themes transportation, digital economy, and security. I am hope this community can suggest additional research themes and sources.

Good question John, smart cities apply Smart Solutions to infrastructure and services in area-based development in order to make them better. For example, making Areas less vulnerable to disasters, using fewer resources, and providing cheaper services. Best wishes for your project

One of the goals which could be achieved in a smart city is to minimize the negative impacts of industries and transportation on the environment. I believe object-specific realtime record of embodied energy and ghg emissions is something that could realized in future smart cities. This topic requires investigation to find its own roadmap for development.

Thank you for your expertise. Our thought processes are aligned for this topic. During our design, we considered the largest sustainable supply chain CO2 emissions sources; building, suppliers, and transportation. Transportation is a research theme. Building and suppliers are subthemes for our project.

In my opinion, as far as developing countries are concerned, urban waste management is also an interesting theme of the smart city.

Can we also look at EFFICIENCY{*} & LOCALIZATION dimension[s].
{*} kindly do not mix this efficiency with the efficiency that is integral to the definition of smart-city in context of use of various natural resources like water, solar energy or the waste management etc, this is about efficiency for evolution in smartness on any of the parameters..

Hi,
Its great to see a smart city coming in to reality from blueprint stage. Many city planning/ transport movements can become less effective when they don't address human preference. How people react to the artificial aspects of a concentrated city should be carefully looked at. You may refer to some previous discussions of Compact City and ideas of Jahn Gehl as discussed in "Life between buildings', designing for human scale to identify some research directions.
