As of now, the active core of this group consists of German researchers talking German, as you may have observed. Depending on the extent of international activity, even we might start writing English :-)
Maybe we should switch again to English in all topics. Reasons:
- International members
- We shouldn't narrow our view and instead of that have a look what other countries do and already did.
- This is a good opportunity to exercise our english for international conferences :-)
Hi! My name is James P. Burke. I am an American graduate student in a mathematics education PhD program at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Although I am new to this program, I have been working as a software developer in support of technologically innovative mathematics research projects for over 15 years. I have created dynamic graphing systems, motion simulations, and other software in support of teaching algebra and calculus concepts, focusing on rate and variation. I have developed classroom networks with Java and TI calculators to allow researchers to study a connected classroom mathematics curriculum. These efforts largely took place under the various projects studying the use and scale of SimCalc MathWorlds.
Today I am a full-time student and a part time researcher on a project looking at haptic modalities for teaching mathematics and science.
I will likely check in here to mostly lurk, as my schedule is daunting. But I hope to increase my interaction in the community over time. As a student, I feel that I should participate, but spend a lot of time listening.
Welcome, James. Nice to see you here. As you might have observed already, this forum has not seen active discussions recently, though a lot of new subscribers joined since our taking-off. This needs not be so, and you also see there are members here who at least read and answer posts (not only me).
Feel free to just observe or, if you like, post any questions or issues you have in your research and studies. Your topic sounds very interesting, so if you come up with a paper or presentation eventually, I would really like to see it.
Hi Elna, a warm welcome to you and thanks for introducing yourself. Looking at your field of work, we do share several interests. As for me and at least some collegues I know here, your topic suggestion also hits the spot. I'd suggest to start a new discussion thread for "numeracy development in the pre-school child" then. Just a thought, but would it make sense to broaden it in terms of "pre-school and lower primary"? And wouldn't you like to tip the discussion off with a statement on your current interest, questions or projects concerning the relationship between numeracy development and media and technology, being this group's overall topic?
