I conducted a study with weed-free plots and herbicide treated plots. I observed that the yield of some herbicide treated plots are more than that of weed-free plot. Will it be appropriate to have a negative weed index. Could the presence of some leguminous weed justify this?

Rarely it happens. Crop-weed interactions may not always be negative. In some cases, the interference may be positive as in commensalism, proto-cooperation, or mutualism. The effect of legumes is an example of mutulism. Some herbicides may have phytotonic effects as well. In such cases, the yield from the treatments can be higher than weed free plots, and hence, you may get a negative weed index!
