If to develop for Web, think about studying PHP, as it has a very good learning curve or Python with Django. You could choose to make a Web application of data analysis, employing some libraries.

As you know there are a huge range of applications. I would recommend you to search in your network for relatives, someone, some company or some no profit organization that needs some application to solve any need of their business.

Companies that use EXEL worksheets; and even have all your business supported by this application are excellent candidates to be your "client" in the project.

This approach will facilitate your elicitation of the requirements because you will take advantage of the customer's business knowledge (application domain).

Be careful only with the size of the project. Thus, you will not frustrate the customer or make project completion in the available course's dead end. Value for customer relationship, also.

I recommend PHP, with MySQL database, and JavaScript. They work seamlessly together for web applications and their user-bases are huge which means when you have a problem, you should be able to get a fix to your problem very quickly by searching the web.

If you would like to create from scratch with fully php, i recommend you to learn htacess also to manage the uri. if you use cms like joomla or WordPress you can use many plugin, its very helpful.

If you want to create the page with fully html and css, and php only the backend to receive request post n get, you must learn how to use ajax jQuery. Ajax can send requests to your php server, and the respon you can display it in your page.

and your team are using PHP Framework (such as Yii, CI, Laravel, etc)

About your question, especially for point "What nature it should have".

If you already study some of computer programming that using OOP

then to learn PHP is not that hard to compare with Java Framework.

You only need to adapt to some "new" technology, function, feature and maybe API.

Second, another important thing is to learn about database system (RDBMS) or maybe you like challenge :) ?. Then why not to start using

NOSQL such as MongoDB, Cassandra or Maria DB.

For now, that is some suggestuin in my opinion and also from my experience as a Lecture and also from the side view as sofware engineer.

I have been developing webpages and database for most part of my studies, I have worked with PHP, Java, ASP.NET but the best and easiest I found was Python with the django framework.
