Anyone, please guide me about creating an effective VR environment for autistic kids? Commercially available applications can be used to record continuous EEG signal, but I want to link an event ( Target/Distractor) to train autistic kids. Your feedback will be highly appreciated. I am not going to give you a scientific answer but in watching my granddaughter who exhibits some autistic traits, she generally avoids most VR games. They are just too scary for her. But there is one that she is addicted to. It is called "Eagle Flight". She gets a lot of joy playing this particular game on PS4 in free style mode.
Those on the autistic spectrum (AS) are plagued with a wide spectrum of hypersensitivities. These oddities can produce great stress for those on the AS when functioning in the day-to-day activities. As humans, we are born with seven senses. These are the five senses traditionally ascribed to humans, which are vision, hearing, taste, smell and touch. The sixth sense is call proprioception, the perception of body position, which is important for balance and agility in movement. The seventh sense is vestibular, which is the perception of our body in relation to gravitational force and acceleration.
I suspect the reason why my granddaughter is attracted to the game lies in the area of proprioception and vestibular.
Thanks, James Marusek . I couldn't agree more with your observation, and this question was also in my mind that maybe VR scenarios will disturb them. As in many cases, autistic kids also display some traits of epilepsy. But recently, some developers have shown that VR is effective in treating autistic kids. "Floreo" it's a company that develops a VR environment for autistic kids, and the son of the CEO of this company has autism. There are some videos on youtube as well, and it seems that they perform well in VR environments. But I am confused about whether autistic kids will cooperate in VR scenarios like target/distractor? What sort of VR environment will be more benefit able for the autistic kids and so on?

on my experience building VR environments and children in the spectrum, the VR environment should be light on contrast and objects. I would start with something calming, with low visual noise (not many objects around), open and not much movement, then slowly increasing the noise.
