How can teachers use modern day technological gadgets to teach in classrooms.
Most students today care less about old fashioned teaching methods in schools. They want to see something new and lay hands on them. They want to be involved.
Attached are my ideas about selecting technology for teaching and learning. Too many people select the technology FIRST, but this is wrong, in my opinion.
We must determine learning outcomes that are required, then learning activities that will allow the students to achieve those outcomes, and only THEN should we consider which of those learning activities can be delivered via technology, and therefore which specific technology to select.
I agree entirely with Michael, who clearly is more knowledgeable about this area of language learning than I am. I can only offer my opinion, based on my limited first hand experience of CALL and MALL materials and what students and colleagues have told me about them.
-Students and teachers need to be encouraged to look beyond gadgetry and graphics to what the materials really offer for the learning process. I know students who have been delighted with a vocabulary learning app that did not teach the vocabulary in context and a listening app with unnatural scripted conversation that was far too easy for them and completely out of place in the era of the podcast.
- True learning, i.e. long-term integration of the language content of any language learning materials, will only take place if the materials enable depth of processing.
-It's a good idea for the teachers to try to integrate learners' CALL or MALL materials with what is done in class. I am at present doing this with a popular web-based method used in Spanish companies: students' tell me the grammatical and lexical content they have been studying and I try to devise ways of practising this material in class in different, more personalized contexts. In general students like the online materials but welcome the opportunity to practise the same language another way.

Not only can tablets, apps, video and interactive whiteboards be learning tools for students, but they can be additional teaching tools for educators. A PBS Learning Media survey of pre-K-12 teachers researched how and what types of technology teachers are using in classrooms, as well as their overall attitudes toward technology. Three-quarters of teachers surveyed expressed a positive opinion of educational technology, stating that technology assists them in reinforcing and expanding on content. After many years of teaching the same or similar lesson plans, it can be challenging to keep students engaged and show enthusiasm as you’re presenting lessons. Interactive presentation tools, video clips, graphics and other audio visual elements are a simple way to keep students actively engaged in lessons, as well as a means to keep your lessons fresh.
Many students are more stimulated and are apt to learn when they can interact with hands-on learning tools, which various forms of educational technology provide. A fifth grade teacher was quoted in a U.S. Department of Education article saying, “Technology is the ultimate carrot for students. It’s something they want to master. Learning to use it enhances their self-esteem and makes them excited about coming to school.” According to PBS LearningMedia research, 74% of teachers surveyed responded that using classroom technology motivates students to learAdd your answern. Technology in the classroom allows students to take greater control of their education because tools like tablets and laptops encourage interactive, hands-on learning.
It’s simple; no child is the same. Every student learns at his or her own pace. There are many ways that integrating technology into the classroom can help students learn at a rate that is comfortable to them, and that allows them to retain information. For example, in-classroom lessons or activities on laptops or tablets allow students to read directions, process information and complete work at their own pace. This also helps free up the teacher’s time so they can give students who may need extra guidance or assistance the attention they require.
Educational apps, search engines, videos, portable technologies and interactive activities provide students with a nearly endless supply of information and resources. Use of the educational technologies including, but not limited to, the tools below support 24/7 learning:
Online lesson plans
Educational apps
Interactive games
Online video and graphics
Accessing books and articles via tablets and e-readers
The learning children do in school prepares them for the future, and for this reason it is important to incorporate technology in the classroom. Over the years, technology has evolved tremendously and will continue to do so. Those changes should be parallel with teachers’ lesson plans and learning techniques of children and classrooms. It’s important to note that expensive classroom technology solutions don’t always result in effective teaching and learning. Simple solutions can lead to influential teaching, which can have a clear impact on learning. By learning to use technology in the classroom at a young age, children are developing the skills and knowledge that is essential in today’s world.
However with all the possibilities, we must care that gadgets would not be source for misdirecting the students' attention away from the benefits intended.
There is a flip side to the question. Which is the ability of the teachers first to use these devices and then use same to teach the students. In making on decision on the type of gadget to use also, the Teacher has to take into cognizance the developmental level of the learners and hence get gadgets and instructional materials suitable for there age. Its is true that the 21st century leaner is very different and since teaching is now child centered the teacher has to first of all KNOW his learners; this knowledge will determine largely what to deploy in the teaching and learning environment. Care must how ever be taken to ensure that the gadgets themselves do not become a distraction for the learner. Personally i use a Win pad and have made use of so much from Youtub, howstuffworks and the physicsclassroom.
