I am working on ultrafast spectroscopy (pump-probe, DFWM), what is "coherent coupling and coherent control", can somebody please suggest a book on these topics.
Coherent control is the application of coherent light sources (lasers) to manipulate atoms and molecules on the sub-atomic scale. The coherence of the light source is transferred to the quantum states in the material systems. Coherent control techniques attempt to manipulate the quantum pathways during photo-chemical processes by controlling the intensity, polarization, phase, wavelength, etc. of the light source. This enables us to control excited states of molecules, dissociation products, molecular rotations, vibrations, and more.
A good reference to start is M Shapiro & P Brumer. "Coherent control of atomic, molecular, and electronic processes"
Coherent control is manipulation of phases of ultrafast laser pulses for various application, for example, to selectively generate coherent wave packet in the excited state or ground state. Ultrashort laser are obtain when one compress the broadband frequency spectrum in such a way that the phase of each frequency are identical. The another name of such pulses are transform limited (TL) pulses or shortest pulse one can achieve from that particular frequency range. Next, one can introduce positive or negative chirp (dispersion) to change the the relative phases of different frequencies of that pulse. By doing so, one can now achieve the molecular system to interact with different frequencies at a certain time manner and thus can control the generation of coherent wave packet.
