Here are my two cents, advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have the potential to significantly impact the future of various professions and jobs. I have been following this topic since Brynjolfsson and Mcafee caused a stir with their productivity vs employment graph in 2012 [1][2] and Rotman’s article in the MIT Technology Review[3]. Since then, there have been a deluge of articles on the subject some in favor and some against the thesis of jobs being lost to automation (for example see ref [5]). Also, since then Brynjolfsson has toned down the alarm by accepting that there is a problem of data towards better understanding the phenomena[6].
Now, from what I have seen the best summary of the debate is given in [4] where the two prominent views are stated as:
“One view claims that we are in a transition phase, but, alike the previous industrial revolutions, in the long run the balance between lost and created jobs will be positive both in numbers and, especially, in quality. The other view claims instead that the economic characteristics of the technologies of the current industrial revolution are profoundly different from the previous ones and that their impact on employment and social equality is likely to be negative on the whole”.
I frankly believe that the second view is completely misguided and the first one is the correct interpretation.
The reason for discarding the second hypothesis is that the current technology is not different from previous technology. The underlying reasoning behind this is that the underlying premise (not usually mentioned) can be characterized as:
“information technology (IT) is the game changer, a uniquely disruptive force that has no historical precedent. This is because it is not only the low-skilled that will be displaced, but highly skilled professionals are also at risk of being displaced by machines. Where previous waves of automation ultimately created wealth and new sectors of employment, we are now witnessing a fundamental shift in the relationship between workers and machines. Machines are no longer tools; they are turning into the workers themselves”. [7]
The last premise is the one that I believe is totally wrong. Machines are not turning into workers and are still tools. Machine learning systems such as ChatGPT are not workers but are still tools. This misconception arises from lack of understanding of what these platforms can and cannot do.
