We see in literature there are primary longitudinal waves or secondary transversal waves. Both are used for material inspection but can any one say which is the better technique or is it a case of multiple data giving higher confidence ? I have been searching literature for a good review paper on different waveforms for detecting different anomalies however this does not exist or, can anyone point me in that direction?
From what you are saying the velocity of waveform is the most important aspect in that the faster the wave the more the depth of resolution or the smaller the wavelength in order to detect a specific anomaly would that be correct. So one wave that is half the speed i.e. the traversal can be a general look at once location has been established then a more in depth can be applied using the primary longitudinal wave (greater velocity/reduced ToF), is this correct?
Velocity is a fundamental property of the material. Higher frequencies (shorter wave lengths) increase resolution but has higher attenuation and lower penetration. P-wave (longitudinal) or s-wave (transverse) are equally good for finding defects. Which one to choose comes down to practical considerations. The advent of multi-beam phase array and matrix systems have increase accuracy and speed of detect detection.
The anomaly detection with ultrasonic waves depends on different parameters like crystallisation, geometry, thermic history, internal friction and others for the inspected materials and, on the other hand, on the ultrasonic equipment like voltage excitation of the probes, beam forming, transducer properties and others. Furthermore, some post-processing techniques extract the interesting information from the data matrices.
