I am in the final stage of my (project) management research, but having trouble finding a theoretical framework that would satisfy my advisor. My research is based on phenomenology with data collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed with Thematic Analysis.
I have attempted to suggest contingency (as in management contingency) theory, but this was rejected as apparently not suitable for qualitative research. I am also being told I cannot use IV/DV or moderating variables. I'm at loss where to find anything that would be suitable. Any help would be much appreciated.
If your qualitative research is exploratory, and most phenomenological research is, then it is seldom appropriate to pre-specify a theoretical framework. That is one reason why it would be inappropriate to rely on a statement of relationships between variables.
So, try telling you advisory that you think it is inappropriate to for you to use a predetermined theoretical framework when your goal is to learn the participants' own perspectives on your topic. If that is not an acceptable answer, then ask for an article that gives an example that would match what your advisor wants.
It seems difficult to answer your answer with this limited information, well advisor seems right that in case of qualitative research there is no need of IVs DVs and moderators. Moreover, you need to support your study with relevant theories in case of exploratory research. You can refer to any similar article related to your field for this
