I have actually taught people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to cook. One of the main things that needs to be assessed is where on the spectrum do they fall? Are they non-verbal and unable to be toilet trained, or are they verbal, highly intelligent, and just have some social deficits? This is the first challenge in this process is assessing where they fall on the "spectrum". Because they can be on either end or anywhere in between.

When I was still teaching high school, this was a weekly activity that I did with my students. We actually made a menu for a meal, listed out all ingredients needed, went to the grocery story, every student was assigned which items they were to comparison shop for, then we would bring it all back to the home economics room and cook in groups following step-by-step directions. Then we would set down and eat family style as a class to teach social skills. It was an amazing experience and I will always hold it close to my heart! So the answer is, yes.....it can be done! I would love to do it again!
