With a shortage of funding (particularly in the US) for the renewal of aging Earth observing satellites, there are concerns about maintaining adequate capabilities to support weather forecasting and climate monitoring activities. A new paradigm seems to be emerging, in which the private sector wants to fill the void. Private companies have begun investing in the development of next-generation satellites that could replace key elements of the Global Observing System. How you think your research could be affected by a shift from a public-funded system with freely available data to a for-profit system with privately-owned data?
