Hello, I do agree that those two motivations are basically essential for students to learn English, especially in English as a Foreign Language context as in my country, Indonesia. First, the intrinsic motivation leads a student to get the basic purposes of learning English then the extrinsic motivation strengthen the desire to make the learning process success.
To present a concrete information or ideas about the need or importance of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in language learning would require a long discussion involving theoretical framework and related readings.
To make it simpler, I'll be sharing my ideas in layman's term, based on personal experience and based on observation.
It's indeed important for students to be intrinsically and extrinsically motivated in language learning. Even in our daily grind, we need to have both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. It is something that answers the questions 'what' and 'why'. Why do you go to work everyday? Because, you must work for your family in order to sustain their needs. They depend much on you. What will you get from it? Self-satisfaction. It's a nice feeling helping. It adds to the essence of your existence. Just like in language learning, if the learner is aware that learning a language is important to him/her then that motivates him/her to work hard for it. That's intrinsic. S/he has an inner drive because s/he finds it a necessity. As a teacher you have to make your students realize the importance of learning a language, for once they know its importance they will be showing interest. But, it doesn't end there. They need to be extrinsically motivated to sustain their interest. There should be a positive reinforcement (from reinforcement theory of motivation by B.F. Skinner), a learner is extrinsically motivated when s/he knows there are people who expect a lot from them, if there are people who will be happy and appreciate of his/her actions. By knowing that, learners will keep on doing such action that yields positive response/results.
Alfrevilyn Dasig, true that! Intrinsic motivation gears up from our sense of accomplishment, the hard work involved in doing something that leads to a viable outcome, and the pleasure one achieves from the actual process of doing something useful. On the other hand, extrinsic motivation is mainly attached to the positive image developed in the eyes of peers and parents, attainment of academic qualification/degree and, in effect, securing a promising job. All these seminal elements together lead one to be self-motivated and self-confident even against all odds of life.
Monica Stevens, cultural affinity also plays a pivotal role in learning a foreign language. Getting acquainted with exotic culture(s), persuades one to come up with self-motivation in order to learn the language of the target culture.
Once again, motivation is that internal goal that guides you towards your ultimate goal. But what about identified motivation? Thanks for raising the point.
Our needs form our motivation, so if students feel the need to know the language, they will be best motivated. That is why learning a language in a foreign language surroundings is the most productive. In the conditions of the native country the teacher needs to create such foreign surroundings in a class
There are intrinsic and extrinsic motivations to learn a language. If we feel we can communicate on the level that we wish to with others without learning their language, then we will. But, if we cannot communicate on the level that we would like with others, we will learn their language. Intrinsic motivation will always carry us over the hump of difficulties and extrinsic deterrents and will help us persevere in reaching fluency. This does not mean that extrinsic motivations cannot help us, but the inner rewards and goals that the language learner has for him or herself will be the driving force in mastering a new language.
Both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation drive learners to learn anything including learning language.Being intrinsically motivated definitely drives one to learn something including language learning. The learner, in this case does not need any push from outside. Extrinsic motivation pulls one to learn something. It sets the learner to action as it will lead to get rewarded, accepted or being benefited by such action. Attitude toward learning language is both a cause and consequence of learning language. Motivation is a very important component of attitude. Favorableness or unfavorableness of attitude toward learning works as a motivating force. At the same time such attitudes result from learning certain skill like skill in mastering a language for example.
Motivation provides a high level of priority for a long time, in this case, learning a foreign language. And motivation itself is based on the awareness of the need for the desired result.

My feeling is that adults have an extrinsic motivation in many cases. It will feel 'more difficult' because it is! A younger brain is like a sponge and is less fixed, which is why we need to promote language learning in schools. We want to develop intrinsic motivations in our adult students, which is why as language teachers we need to provide a 'fun' or at least 'stress free' environment. There is always some stress involved in language learning because we need to make mistakes in order to advance, so we have to show our students that making 'mistakes' is 'normal' and that a willingness to do so will stand you in good stead over the long-term. In summary, motivation is vitally important in learning a language and we need to nurture these motivations in our students. It is possible to have an enjoyable experience while learning a language that will ultimately benefit the learner as a human being - it is a teacher's responsibility to create an environment in class or online that nurtures every student's valuable potential in this regard.
Motivation is essential to learn something. Realizing the importance of learning a particular language will drive the person to enage in exploring the language. Both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation will help language learners attain positive results in using the target language. Attitude in all endeavors, particularly in learning,
Need and motivation are very important to learn all courses, not just language, because they are the inner forces that motivate the individual to acquire new knowledge and experiences.
More information, Motivation and attitude provide primary impetus to initiate learning language and later the driving force to sustain the long and often tedious learning process. Lack of attention to these factors can lead to inefficiencies in learning.
