Generally, we think that the 4fn level energies are determined by interaction within lanthanide ion, which will be not much influenced by the crystal field due to the shielding effect by 5s and 5p electron. Following this idea, I cannot understand the ground state energies of 4fn of lanthanide ions are different from compounds to compounds, for example, the ground state energies of Eu2+ ions 4f7 level in CaF2 and YPO4 are different.
