Although the need for community nurses is expanding in many nations, there are still not as many of them as there should be, and many students do not perceive that this is a very exciting field to work in.
I can understand why most nurses start and many times stay in the conventional hospital setting. My career has been a mix of Critical Care, trauma, and ED. However, there is a growing trend and need for Healthcare in the community setting. Perhaps, more community Nursing needs to be discussed in Nursing school.
Need to make awareness among nurses regarding Community health and how it is most important in all the aspects (preventive, Curative and Promotive) of health.
Nursing is the essence of preventive health services. We know this. However, health system managers need to create appropriate policies and encourage preventive health services.
During training: an internship or some workshadow-days with a Community Health Nurse or in a outpatent care setting could give an insight, and show how varied the tasks in these areas are.
For Professionals: "Transfer windows" allow HCP in a later stage of their career "to snoop" in a other field, and check if this area is attractiv for them. No risk to lose the established job in the familiar team, but the chance to get a prolonged try in a new field with the option of a permanent change - should it fit.
