What is the difference between self selection sampling and convenience sampling? The self selection sampling can be considered as a type of non probability sampling or not?
2. Both are likely to be unrepresentative of the target population on any number of attributes.
3. As long as you follow the principles of informed consent for study participants, _any_ sample is self-selected to some degree.
4. You may consider self-selection as a special case of convenience sample. However, you'd never have any self-selected participants without them having been solicited in the first place (e.g., convenience sample means some readily accessible set is targeted for solicitation).
1- Method of Sampling like SRS and /or RSS from units in a population with frame and label for each unit. We say that we have selection of sampling method.
2- X1, ..,Xn as random variables( iid) from a distribution like Normal distribution. similarly, Y1, ...,Yn as random variable . So, we can compute Covariance of sampling between X and Y.
Both are nonprobability sampling. The big problem with nonprobability sampling is bias. I would expect self-selection to likely be the most biased, representing those with a vested interest more than the rest of the population. That could mean both numbers particularly high and those particularly low in a quantitative survey.
There has been work done using covariates to try to make better use of nonprobability sampling. See the following preprint of a survey journal paper by Richard Valliant, for example:
Convenience sampling is a non-probability (non-random) sampling method that focuses on the most relevant characteristics for inclusion in the purposive sample.
