I like to do some project in surface engineering. I like to coat surface of automobile piston to improve its heat resistance and wear. Please suggest what type of coating is done. And what are the test we need to take after the coating to know about the status after coating.

Do you mean the coating applied to the piston crown facing the combustion chamber? Such a coating with low thermal conductivity on automotive pistons can serve as a temperature barrier and perform three functions simultaneously: lower the piston temperature, reduce heat loss through the piston and increase the temperature in the combustion chamber. The last two functions of the thermal barrier coating can provide an increase in engine efficiency. The currently known thermal barrier plasma-sprayed ceramic coatings based on YSZ (zirconium dioxide stabilized with yttrium oxide) used for gas turbines are of little use for pistons of internal combustion engines. Sometimes YSZ coatings are applied to racing engine pistons, but their service life is too short for use in conventional automobile engines. I have dealt with this problem for many years and have developed several coatings that are long-term stable on both aluminum and steel pistons in internal combustion engines. a piston can be made more efficient with a ceramic coating, which improves the device’s heat reflection and transfers part of the detonation energy into the fuel burning phase. Ceramic coated pistons can assist higher fuel burning efficiency and reduced carbon accumulation, which in turn makes detonation more effective.

Dear sir if possible you can go with solution precursor. It is giving good results. Adhesive test, heat conductivity and coefficient of heet etc.
