How we can prepare a single natural fiber in to a powder form for FTIR test?
Thank you sir, Just for material characterization such as FTIR, TGA and other tests i want to make it in the form of powder i.e very fine particles. How can we achieve that ?
What is the diameter of the fibre - as we can do DMA on it if it is large enough and this will often give more information than a DSC or DTA run. We would need 50mm of each fibre to do DMA on it. T range from -180C to over 400C or well above Tg but
Milling suggested by Michael Ofem will work if you have lot of fibers. But one should be careful. Milling process (by heat etc.) has been known to change the morphologu of the polymer (e.g. crystallinity). Cooling the mill with dry ice will alleviate this. If you have just a single fiber, then freezing it (liquid N2) and then crushing it might help. But, why do you want to make a powder out of a fiber? Spectra from an oriented fiber gives you lot more information than that from an unoriented powder.
I wonder, how much area needed, or how much sample needed to generate FTIR spectrum. I found out that for nm area or micron areas will be difficult , which later force me to use XPS to investigate polymer structural changes of irradiated polymers. Therefore, I think you need to look at the limitation of FTIR first.
I am agree with Michael about his comment. But, Barath did you mention tha addtion of a polymer to your fibers? Because, the obtention of FTIR spectra of single small natural fibers can be analyzed by DRIFT or microscope FTIR, as I know. T. Madera
