I am using speed breeding for generation advancement in the genomic selection pipeline of durum wheat. in the growth chamber the conditions are the following :
-photoperiod of 22 hours light/2 hours darkness
-humidity 70%
-LED light.
At flowering time I started to see strange spike morphology (as shown in the pictures ). without producing seeds at the end of the cycle ( sometimes 1 or 2 seeds per spike )
Can anyone help me to understand why I am getting this kind of spikes ?
Light and temperature are the most important factors stimulating flowering in plants. Here, the drastic change in light period is the reason for this modification, for flowering genes are not acting good in expression!! Regards.
Dear Hafssa Kabbaj are you working with mutants? Have you seeing this phenotype on all your genotypes? I don't have any experience with wheat; however, as Medhat Elsahookie has mentioned, flowering is highy dependant on illumination conditions. Therefore, you must consider this factor, and its interaction with genotypes. Likely it might be part of your goals: to select those genotypes that positively respond to speed breeding conditions.

-For the temperature is between 22 and 25°C all the cycle.
-they are not mutant.
-this phenotype is not present in all genotypes. furthermore, when the genotypes with the shown phenotype are planted in glasshouse (LED light+ sun light) , they are behaving differently (normal phenotype).
I was thinking maybe it is the quality of LED light ??
Regardless the light source, the quantity of light (PPFD) that plants received must also be controlled.
The behavior of this particular genotype is clearly showing that the spike formation is highly dependent of light (photoperiod), at least for it.
