Dear colleagues, It is with great pleasure that I announce my role as a guest editor for the journal Microorganisms in a special issue dedicated to microalgae biotechnology. This edition aims to address emerging and challenging topics in this interdisciplinary field.

The main topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Challenges in large-scale cultivation of microalgae; * Production, characterization, and purification of poorly studied metabolites; * Opportunities for microalgae as future food; * Alternative pathways for algal biofuel production.
