Phenomenography is a research approach you could use to study sociomateriality as the phenomenon in a relation with people (of a specific type or in general).

In short the answer is yes. May I ask, what is your intent?

Thanks Ilona. I intend to study design considerations of VLEs in the context of HEIs in developing countries. Although it has been argued that ethnography is married to sociomateriality, I am interested to use phenomenography as my research approach.

Ever since I was offered work on an EIS and thought I might have a job I was interested in I am cautious about abbreviations. (My experitse was executive information systems and the job was environmental impact study.) VLE= virtual learning environment and HEI = higher education institution?

Certainly if you are interested in studying variation in design considerations of VLEs phenomenography is a good approach to use.

And the lens you use for your analytical framework can nestle in sociomateriality. Though i am stil not sure what that word means in this context. Is it similar to socio-technical? Or has that become old-fashioned?

Yes Ilona the abbreviations were correct. Sorry about that. Anyway, somehow sociomateriality is akin to socio-technical perspectices but it's main tenet is that social and material factors are constitutively entangled that it is difficult to think about one while neglecting the other. Technology emerges with practices of people in the environment. Hence, what I am looking is how technology influences teaching practices and vice versa with the hope of extracting design considerations as an outcome. Design considerations in this context may involve both social and material factors based on the variation of experiences of the teachers who were involved in the delivery of courses over the VLE.
