I am developing an algorithm for the above topic.
Algorithm should be application specific or can I adopt generalized one?
I don't think you need to develop application specific query processing algorithm. energy efficiency can be obtained at different levels / layers. You can reduce transmission energy, which is mostly done at network, datalink or physical layers, or you can reduce processing power, which is related to the complexity of your algorithm and the messages it may require.
I am also a research in query processing for wireless sensor networks. trying to develop an algorithm to reduce the amount of data retrieved from the network . could you please help me to find out a new direction for my algorithm to be proposed for my research ??
To save energy in sensor networks you can:
- minimize transmission speed,
- minimize the volume of transmitted data,
- minimize processing speed,
- minimize computational complexity,
- sometime compression of transmitted data can help, but you have to find a trade-off between the gain of data volume against the loss of computational complexity,
- slow down the query rate,
- query devices in fixed (or dynamically defined) time slots, and switching off their interfaces outside those time slots.
For a given application it is easier to find an appropriate solution.

am thinking to integrate a query optimizer to minimize the number of queries
It can be application specific.But in the case if you are considering energy concern than it should be applicable on all type of applications, those are implemented using energy efficient architecture.
