Some supervisors require that they be the corresponding author for their students' first author publications, while others do not. Is there something that young, naive postgraduate students should be aware of in terms of implications for future jobs in research that require a certain number of 'corresponding author publications'? Also, if I'm not mistaken, the corresponding authors have copyrights to the work, why is this important?
There's nothing wrong with being the first author in the paper published from your postgraduate thesis. Also, as the Head of the research team, there's also nothing wrong with the supervisor being the corresponding author. There's nothing to worry about.
1. It depends on the discipline. Last is in certain disciplines more important than first. The trend is to move to the first author being the most important or lead author. More and more web sites q. only the first three authors if there are more than three.
3. Even if the publication is from your thesis, if the supervisor is (world) famous and he/she wants to be the first author, I would consider it an honour that my work is so important that the supervisor is prepared to put his/her seal of approval on the work. It would mean kudos when applying for a position or a promotion, as the committee would be aware of the argument a above.
4. On (quite) the other hand. Do not be bullied into a submissive author position you do want to be in, e.g. where you have done "all" the work, and the supervisor almost nothing and now just want to score off you.
5. Sometimes supervisors feel they have done all the hard work, and they had to drag the candidate from pillar to post to have the thesis completed. I would then not moan too much if the supervisor wants his/her name first; corresponding, or last, should the latter be the case.
