Accurate mapping of land cover at continental or global scales is currently limited by the spatial and temporal characteristics of the available satellite data. Many landscape

features occur at spatial scales much finer than the resolution of the primary satellites used for continental or global land cover mapping (e.g., MODIS, AVHRR). Methods for

mapping land cover at sub-pixel level are thus of great interest. Several approaches have been used to estimate sub-pixel fractional cover.
