Research supports the notion that flourishing is strongly related to intrinsic motivation as defined by self-determination theory (Autonomy, Relatedness, Competence). What happens if someone has an activity/occupation that fulfills this aspect of life for them and for whatever reason loses the activity? EX. An athlete whose injury stops them from competing.

Are these individuals more likely to find an new purpose? Having experienced fulfillment from having a purpose and being part of a community of practice and being competent, does intrinsic motivation become a value in itself so that individuals will then seek out a new situation that provides this kind of fulfillment?
