Yes, Savinaya, we also use a self-appraisal form. This can be biased in our own favor, as you have described. But it can also be accurate depending on the integrity of the staff. So, this is not the appraisal tool on which staff performance is taken into account for promotions etc.

The more important tools are the Evaluations done by the Director and Deputy Director and by our students. All that information is considered, and finally it is the Director's evaluation that is important because this person has received formal training to make a reasonably 'correct evaluation' (within some limitations of human error).

Sir, I think self appraisal form has two main aims - 1) to know the attitude of the person (how he likes to present himself and with how much integrity) - that attitude helps the seconding authority to decide better 2) some unrevealed aspects of the person which never come out in routine business activity but may be much precious in crucial times. [for example, I mentioned in my self appraisal that I have donated blood for 14 times by the time I completed my MBBS and this made my seniors to decide that for next blood donation camp, I'd be best suited mascot of advertisement]

Rakesh Ranjan Pathak, I think your seniors are biased on this matter.Question comes here, if the person is not good enough in his field and he marks himself excellent and Management decides he is the best. Another hand , the person marks himself poor , Management decides that he is not fit to be in the field because he claimed himself poor and terminates him after long service for the institution. Yes, Miranda Yeoh,the students are the one who should give the feed back about their teacher because they are the consumers.Another hand,students will have fear if they write some actual fact ,staff or management will fail them.In most of the colleges,students feed back form will be handed over to the H.O.D after filling it.There are changes where H.O.D and head of institution can manipulate it.So students should give the feedback directly to management not through H.O.D or Dean.There should be separate management body to regulate it.

Dear Savinay, if the seniors are biased, hardly any hope is left because "boss is always right" and the juniors are on the wrong side of the table or at the receiving end - whatever we call it. I interpreted the self-appraisal form only for unbiased and unpersonalized atmosphere. And of course, others appraisal is more relevant and if the voters are many, even certain biases can be ruled out - but at the same time, popularity is not necessarily translated into productivity. Amitabh Bachhan contested and won the seat of Allahabad election but to what benefit ? Appraisal by performance is far more objective than opinion based appraisals - that's a proven truth in the management science (references available, if required).

In my opinion, the procedure of submitting Self appraisal form is mainly to know what you have done in this ongoing academic year regarding your performance in teaching and after critical self evaluation, where do you stand in this vast pool of teaching- learning institute. If you find any lacunae, in your performance, they should be corrected in next year and thus the best of you can be enjoyed by the students. of course, positive attitute should be in mind.

I too agree with Dr Kusum, the institute itself can't keep track of all the achievements of any given employee, esp when the population is floating and turnover rate is high.

How do we measure it? What are all the parameters used to measure poor o excellent.Is there any target?.I think management duty to keep his/her record.

This also applies to the API score mandated by the UGC in India. Specially the Teaching section for which more than 100 points are assigned. It is just as possible to underrate oneself as it is to overrate.

In fact, the philosophy behind introducing the concept self-appraisal reports has been defeated by some unscrupulous teachers. It is true that those who might have joined the teaching profession because they could not get any other job are making the process of self-evaluation a matter of joke.

Now a days we bother about quantity of work not quality of work. The quantity of work requires numbers not quality. Self appraisal form bothers about quantity not quality most of the cases.

You are right. In the Indian system at least, the number of publications is taken to be more important! Accordingly, quantity has been given importance.

For the purposes of quantity , they publish same paper with little change in title in different journals. I have some copies of such articles.But I am not aware where to file case against such unethical practice.

Inform the University concerned. If the University is serious about such matters, some steps would surely be taken.
