Dear colleagues,
I am working on a new project called ArcheOS-software-list, a GitHub repository that collects open-source software and digital tools useful for archaeology. The goal is to revitalize the ArcheOS project, the GNU/Linux system for archaeologists developed years ago by Arc-Team. The software list will also serve as an updated and accessible resource for researchers, professionals, and enthusiasts who want to adopt FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software) solutions in their work.
At the moment, the repository is in its initial phase, but it will be updated with software tested in professional and academic archaeological fieldwork.
I am looking for collaborators who can:
- Suggest new open-source tools useful for archaeology.
- Improve documentation or add usage examples.
- Share experiences or suggestions to expand the project.

Thank you Ronald M. Visser for the lists. I will add the software to ArcheOS list ASAP. I have to check the past version of ArcheOS (the 4th release dates back to 2011) and merge your suggestion with the old list.
Hi Luca Bezzi, for BIM and HBIM purposes I tested and exploited FreeCAD open source software. It includes the ifcOpenShell library and dedicated workbenches and tools for parametric design. Of course it not includes predefined library of architectural heritage, but it allows to create and manage ad-hoc ones. Then, smart and dedicated information can be included into parametric objects.
If I remember well, FreeCAD was included into ArcheOS just as CAD software.

Thank you Filippo Diara . Yes FreeCAD was inside ArcheOS, but it is very long I don't use it. I did not know it has now BIM extensions. I will add it to the list. Thank you again!

Grazie Giovanni Cassarino . Tempo addietro avevamo sviluppato un software per gestire il soil triangle. Lo avevamo usato per un po', ma poi mi ero accorto di un errore. Cerco di recuperare il codice e provo a correggerlo. Appena ci riesco, lo scrivo qui, se ti va di dare un'occhiata.

I am going on updating the software list for ArcheOS. I still have to work on dendro and DBMS, but I already insert some software. Actually I was working to upload also some screenshots of the software in action (I started with InVesalius, as I am currently working on the 3D CT scan of the mummy of Similaun). It will be a long work, but I think I will collect material for most of the software. BTW there are some application that I use rarely, like BIM or Dendro. Filippo Diara , maybe you could send me a screenshot of FreeCAD used for BIM in archaeology?
