I'm studying in India, Hyderabad. I'm interested in a project for saturation flow rate. Can I use Vissim for this? I did not find any where related to saturation flow/Capacity using Vissim. Is there any technical papers or thesis available online?
Vissim uses the car following algorithm to reflect a saturation flow. This means dealing with the way the objects respond to each other to determine the sat flow. There is some discussion in the manual, which is a good place to start. there's more than 700 pages of discussion in the document.
If you have a calibrated VISSIM network to represent the traffic condition you are interested in, then you can find the average headway of vehicles during queue discharge. Say it takes 25 seconds from the beginning of green for a queue to discharge, then find the headways of all vehicles for that duration and average it. If say your average discharge headway from a lane is 1.8 seconds, then 3600/1.8 =2000 veh/hr/lane is your sat flow.
If you are interested in simulating mixed traffic with lane indiscipline, please refer to papers which have calibrated vissim parameters for such traffic condition.
First of all u if u wanna use vissim u need to calibrate it according to the traffic scenario u are going to deal with. Plus saturation flow can be computed, it depends whether u are taking ua data on a road stretch or at an intersection. Also there are nemurous papers available at google scholar , u may have a look there.
