Yes they need them or they need a manager. Art is a business

It entirely depends how you consider to concept entrepreneurship. If (as many do) you simply refer to it as setting up a new business doing stuff, then if, as an artist or creative, you need to earn income from your art, then yes, you need the competencies involved in setting up an running a business. But the skills in running a business are not entrepreneurship.

Many of the competencies (vision, creativity etc) associated with entrepreneurial work are, I suggest, already practiced by the creatives and artists. In practice, in my teaching entrepreneurship as the art of enterprise, then it is the business entrepreneurs who have much to learn from the creatives.

#1 - Yes and no...depends on the artist. They should have at least a basic knowledge of what has to be done on the business side. If they don't (and they need to recognize this), they should hire an agent, gallery, business manager, etc. to help them. This is also dependent on which stage of their career they are in. If they are just starting out and don't have a huge body of work, they may not be able to promote their vision consistently. If they are already established, they should consider hiring on the business end so they can focus on the work they are creating.

#2 - Yes, they should have some entrepreneurial competencies and know when to hire someone to help them with the business components.

#3 - Some do. Some don't. Successful artists use them. I have heard many artists say they don't like the business side and just ignore it. They are generally stuck in other jobs and won't progress very far in the art world.

This is a very generalized answer based on my experience with the artists I have encountered. But I do believe the basic sentiments hold true.

But my deep conviction is that they should know them, at least to protect themselves in working with galleries and managers. 100 functional for the development, for the sale of art, for success - I believe that the manager can not take, a large share of responsibility to his art lies on the artist himself. Example, today there is a manager and tomorrow there is no manager. Or he is simply not competent and does nothing, then the artist himself suffers.

Yes at the same time. Dealings in art is the most likely way for artists to make sufficient money. So if they don’t have a management company, then they suffer organizing all their projects and also fall prey to bad dealings simply because there’s so much on their plate. Creative people need space to think and process their own information and their carefree expression. That’s why you need the manager so they focus on all the business and then you as the artist just focus on the making art.
