I wish to identify the factors associated with completed suicide victims among force personel. Personel from different remote areas were recruited in a posting place. What study design would be most appropriate to identify the factors associated with completed suicide events, when victims are no longer in the world to tell them about it.

I would suggest looking at the work of Michael Chandler University of British Columbia, his work has found in first nations communities, that the strength of the community makes a huge difference to youth and adult suicide, similarly work with American first nations peoples has found that treating the returned solders with traditional methods for re-incorporating them into the community also substantially reduces suicde risk, I would suggest testing some of these ideas in your research

I would like to share my experience with the psychosocial evaluation of patients with attempted suicide . I was the head of the toxicology & IMC unit of Stanley medical college in 2000-2001 . We had utilised 1) Beck's Intent scale score to evaluate the intent to commit suicide 2) Presumptive life stress event scale ( PLSES ) by Singh et al , which include 50 stressful life events before suicidal event & 3) Immediate situational precursor symptoms leading to suicidal event . These were done in all patients , who were admitted in the unit . In those who died , it was difficult to obtain the reliable cause of suicide . It would be interesting to compare , if you could obtain such data from the subgroup of soldiers you are evaluating . The details of my study are available in my contributions ( as dataset & article ) , which you might find it useful as Singh's paper on PLSES deals with Indian subjects .
