I am working on forming of light metals. One of the problems of metal forming processes is the residual stress created during the process. To solve this problem are used methods such as: Annealing, Shot peening and ... . My question is whether we can minimize residual stress during the forming process? This means that the decisions to the process parameters.
The residual stresses are occurring due to the materials (yield) strength. If you like to reduce these stresses, then the yield strength of the material should be lowered (for example by deforming at higher temperature at which the yield strength is reduced).
To reduse the residual stress you must more careful control the temperatore and presaure during forming. It can help if you will increase the forming temperature, but after you will need apply an aditiopnal heat treatment with controled cooling temperature.
Anneal your material at different cooling rate (control furnace cooling) & temperature of heating, after that calculate the residual stress (analysis the XRD of the material) & compare.
One solution to reduce stress is standard heat treatment. The other approach is by obtaining re-dimensional voltages over the entire volume of the deail. Then all the states of internal voltages are the same. This is achieved by three-dimensional even pressure. This implementation scheme is very labor-intensive and complex to implement.
