ultrasound waves inspection of materials and of human tissues is an important diagnostic tool. One can detect the inhomogeneities in the material such as voides, cracks, or foreign domains from any other contamination during the preparation.
Ultrasound imaging is based on the scattering of the ultrasound waves if their path has obstacles or reflecting boundaries. The most important parameter is the resolution of the features in the ultrasound pictures. The resolution depends on the wavelength of the sound waves. As the wavelength decreases the waves will be able to resolve the smaller objects.
The other important issue for advancement of such technique is increasing the sensitivity of the ultrasound sensors by developing sensitive piezoelectric transducer.
In addition to producing powerful ultrasound generators with high linearity and dynamic range.
The remaining issue is the powerful ultrasound image acquisition and processing algorithms. This is required to enhance the pictures , extract their features and identifying the defects

2) In critical mechanical apllication of aerospace etc. it is standard for quality inspection.
3) New frontier is mechanical joining technology using power ultrasonics of manufacturing of mechanical parts (plastics as well as metallic).
4) Ultrasonics for wire bonding of semciductor is well established
5) New applications of power ultrasonics for waste treatment
6) Challenges: often resonance of piezo driven resonators are applied. This is a challenge for nonlinear "real life" application
